In parts of Asia, low rainfall coupled with its unreliable distribution over space and time proved to be a constraint for sustaining livelihood systems that depend on agriculture and allied occupations. For addressing low rainfall-associated risks to agriculture and allied occupations, it is important to promote the advances in efficient water application technologies that could support agriculture in low rainfall zones. Water Conserving Rootzone Irrigation Technique (Root Irrigation) is one such technology developed by Dr. K. Satyagopal IAS, Additional Chief Secretary/Commissioner of Revenue Administration, Disaster Management and Mitigation Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, India.

Root Irrigation is a very simple, low cost but very effective technique and its efficacy has been tested during the years 2016-2018 at different locations in India. For introducing Root Irrigation to select countries in Asia, RIMES in collaboration with the Department of Food, Agriculture and Bioresources under AIT’s School of Environment, Resources and Development and AIT will hold a training workshop and demonstration on Root Irrigation technology on 10 and 11th September 2018 in AIT Campus. The main objective of the workshop is Promotion of Innovative Water Conservation Technologies for Enhancing Agriculture/Horticulture Productivity. This initiative is part of RIMES Climate Risk Management Program and aims at building suitable adaptation strategies for stainable agriculture.
