Position Title:  Meteorologist

Background:   The Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Africa and Asia (RIMES) is an international and intergovernmental institution, owned and managed by its Member States, for the generation and application of early warning information. RIMES evolved from the efforts of countries in Africa and Asia, in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, to establish a regional early warning system within a multi-hazard framework for the generation and communication of early warning information, and capacity building for preparedness and response to trans-boundary hazards. RIMES was established on 30 April 2009, and was registered with the United Nations on 1 July 2009. RIMES operates from its regional early warning center located at the campus of the Asian Institute of Technology in Pathumthani.

Position Description:  The Meteorologist of this consulting service is to support the enhancement of TNSMART so it can serve as a one stop solution for all forecast information and data needs for TNDRRA. Meteorologists are responsible for reviewing all NWP forecast products integrated in TNSDMA and accessing their performance at various administrative levels. 

Contract Type: Full-Time Contract 

Duty station: TNSDMA office at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Skills and Qualifications: 

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge

  • Doctorate or Master’s degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a closely related field.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in related field.

Skills and abilities 

  • Certificate courses in atmospheric physics, dynamics, thermodynamics, climatology, satellite meteorology, and other relevant subjects
  • Competence in using computer software for data processing and analysis is necessary. This may include software for visualisation, statistical analysis, and geographical information systems (GIS).
  • Familiarity with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of AWS equipment is essential. This includes understanding sensor calibration, data transmission systems, and other technical aspects of the instrumentation will be an advantage)

  • Good communication (written, verbal, and presentation) skills in English. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Hazard risk analyst Meteorologist will report to Anshul Agarwal, RIMES Hydro met Team Lead and work in the supervision of the Project coordinator, TNSMART, and in coordination with all Team members shall have the following specific tasks

  • Develop and enforce standard operating procedures for observation data collection, storage, and reporting
  • Interpret AWS data to understand weather patterns, climate trends, and potential impacts on various sectors, such as agriculture, transportation, and emergency management
  • Evaluate various forecast products integrated in TNSDMA and assess their performance at various administrative levels
  • Evaluate different forecast products to capture the extreme events in the region
  • Perform periodic audits to ensure adherence to established quality standards
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance data quality and accuracy
  • Develop protocols for responding to severe weather events or emergencies
  • Coordinate with relevant agencies, such as disaster management authorities, during extreme weather conditions
  • Ensure timely dissemination of critical weather data during emergencies
  • Periodically review data, equipment, and procedures to ensure compliance with standards and protocols
  • Conduct audits and evaluations of the AWS station's performance.
