The discussions will help the local and national representatives understand key monsoon related issues at the local level and chart out current emergency preparedness plans from the national to local level using EWS information.  

Discussion on monsoon preparedness kicked off in Melamchi Municipality, Sindhupalchowk, Nepal with participation of local level representatives of adjoining wards and municipalities, security agencies, media, key stakeholders from districts and authorities from the national level including Meteorological Forecasting Division,Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Authority and Ministry of Federal Affairs & General Administration.  

The discussions will help the representatives understand key monsoon-related issues at the local level, discuss the possible outlook for the monsoon in Melamchi and Indrawati basin from DHM, chart out current emergency preparedness plans from the national to local level, and implement EWS and communication tree (a mechanism) in case of floods or landslides.  

The event is a part of the ‘Strengthening Last Mile Communications’ program, which is being implemented in four countries across the South Asia region including Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It aims to work on climate resilience through the effective dissemination of timely early warning information among last-mile users for improved disaster preparedness and risk mitigation. The initiative is funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and is implemented by RIMES.
