RIMES and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) participated jointly in the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Open Science Conference (OSC) held from 24-28 October in Denver, Colorado, USA. S.H.M Fakhruddin (RIMES) and Mukand S. Babel (AIT) presented a research paper on experiences with the decision support system (DSS) for a location specific early warning system for flood risk management in Bangladesh. A poster on the DSS was also presented, receiving an outstanding poster presentation award from the OSC.
The WCRP mission is to facilitate analysis and prediction of Earth system variability and change for use in an increasing range of practical applications of direct relevance, benefit and value to society. This first OSC brought together the entire WCRP’s research community, and engaged other key international research programmes. Through a unique synthesis of research findings, the OSC aimed to assess current state of knowledge on climate variability and change, identify the most urgent scientific issues and research challenges, and ascertain how the WCRP can best facilitate research and develop partnerships critical for progress. A key outcome of the OSC will be measurable contributions on the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
